1 7 The Austrian Christian Socials and Political Democratization Schumpeter's main tie with the Austrian Christian Social Party was a shared opposition to the Social Democrats' multifaceted program of democratization. He did not write or act as a Christian Social intellectual, nor did he ever adopt the religious character of Christian Social thought. While the Christian Social movement drew its support from the lower middle class and peasantry, Schumpeter regarded himself as an adviser to aristocratic political circles.

The contrasts with Schumpeter's positions on these matters is quite clear. Nowhere in his wartime writings—or indeed in his later work— did Schumpeter join with the SDP in its principled stand for the expansion of suffrage or the abolition of privileged voting rights. On suffrage, his recorded position was one of resignation; one may regret the establishment of general voting rights, but such rights could not be revoked without unpleasant political repercussions, he argued (Schumpeter 1985, 284).
